Then we thought we had it all–
We ranted, raved, and tried;
We dared to crumble, fall, and cry.

The world was at our command;
Those faraway stars and lands–
Oh, not ever a day was bland!

Your mad, tinkling laughter–
That willful, shameless demand;
I was failing, no–just left behind.

And yes, we loved and smiled–
And floated, swam, and planned!
In the midst of that raging hunger,
All promises were built of sand.
