“Becoming A Man”

Show Text

the right of passage commences–
a brave allusion, to a future, left to intuition.
the village elders come forth;
a trembling youngster, to cruel fate, resorts.
he bends, humbly, before the court.
the village master speaks his piece.
a bountiful harvest is his wish.
the coming monsoon will help.
the land prepares itself.
amidst the crowd that regards him;
the young lad needs the strength within.
he is announced to join the ranks,
of elite soldiers to guard against all pranks.
he leaves the safety of childhood innocence.
his body quivers–already tired, half-spent.
a heavier task awaits him;
he becomes a man–the ancient rites begin.
