“Ako’y Hindi Mananahimik”

Close up of a hand writing on a piece of paper.

Ako kailanma’y hindi mananahimik,
Patuloy na tutugon, sisigaw, at iimik;
Sa gitna man ng pighati’t pag-ibig,
Sa dilim ng gabi’t may busal man ang bibig.

Pagiging manunulat ko’y gagamitin;
Ipagsisigawan sa lahat at dadalhin,
Mga daing ng kabaro, kaibigan ko’t kapatid,
Pantay-pantay sanang pagtrato’t pagtingin.

Bawat kudlit, diin, bigkas, at titik,
Tinta ma’y paubos na’t kamay ay manginig;
Nilamukos na papel at pusong naghihimagsik;
Isasatinig aking ibig, kaalama’y ihahasik.

Isalang man sa pagsubok at pagtitiis,
Kalam ng sikmura man o labis na hinagpis;
Pilipino ngang pangkaraniwan lamang,
Ngunit Pilipinong may karapatan rin lang.

Never ever shall I remain silent,
I’ll continue to speak my soul and my mind;
In the midst of gloom or of love,
In the dark of night or even when I’m gagged.

My being a writer, I shall fully exploit,
To inform all men and further expose,
The plight of confrères, friends, and siblings–
Equality and equity for each and for all.

Every stroke, mark, enunciation, and figure,
A dwindling reserve of ink or a trembling hand;
A crumpled sheet of paper and a raging heart,
I shall spit my bit and share my piece.

Even as I am reduced to privation and grief,
Despite the threat of hunger or the loss of hope;
Indeed, I’m an average Filipino;
Yet, I’m still a Filipino, entitled to my rights.
